An uncommon natural lake
Unlike the area's reservoirs, the Estany de Montcortès is a natural lake formed by karst dissolution, with very clear water and a forest setting that makes it feel quite different from the other bodies of water in the area.
The circular route
A flat, well-signposted path circles the whole lake, a short and very manageable family walk with several points of access to the water.
Can you swim in it?
Yes, swimming is allowed in designated areas, although the water stays cool even at the height of summer because of its karst origin.
The Basturs lakes, nearby
A short distance away, the Basturs lakes are another geological rarity in the area — peat-bog lakes of a different origin, which can be combined into the same trip.
